As close as it gets to an endgame Speedy (with a nearly six-figure price)
Back in 2019 Omega announced the long-awaited return of the iconic Calibre 321, the Speedmaster movement that had gone to the moon. This movement debuted in the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch 321, a platinum watch on leather strap with sub-dials done in not just any meteorite but lunar meteorite. Now, Omega has released what a showstopper in the Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 done in a matching platinum flat-link bracelet that we’ve seen on models like the Ed White and is reminiscent of that original 1039 bracelet.
The new Speedy 321 Ref. 311.90.42.30.99.002 measures 42mm wide and 13.4mm thick with a 47.6mm lug-to-lug measurement. There are small details and special touches everywhere, like the black ceramic bezel with white enamel tachymeter scale and black onyx step dial with indices, hands (sans chronograph hand), and vintage Omega logo all done in white gold. Speaking of vintage, the true nerds will appreciate the “dot over 90” graduation on the tachymeter.
Of course, the Calibre 321 is the heart and soul of this watch. This movement was the result of a lot of effort and R&D by Omega with the brand saying “For the Calibre 321 project, OMEGA utilized a dedicated team of experts who worked efficiently over two years and in total secrecy to bring the movement to life. The small group was composed of researchers, developers and historians, as well as the finest craftsmen and experienced watchmakers. To protect the project’s exclusive details, the team even worked under the codename 'Alaska 11' in line with the names that OMEGA used for its secret Speedmaster designs for NASA in the 1960s and 70s…Uniquely, all aspects of creation will be undertaken within a dedicated Calibre 321 workshop. For each movement, the assembly, as well as the watch head and bracelet assembly will be performed by the same watchmaker…”
The beautiful manual wind movement is as close as possible to the original that powered the watches that went to the moon. The column wheel chronograph is a visual treat with the classically beautiful movement design and Sedna gold PVD coated finish throughout. The Calibre 321 operates at 2.5 Hz and has a 55-hour power reserve.
Speedy fanatics will recognize that this isn’t the first solid-gold Speedmaster 321 as there was the Ref. 311.50.39.30.01.001 done in a Canopus gold (Omega’s proprietary white gold) case and bracelet albeit with the standard non-meteorite dial. And that one was a steal at $81,000 compared to what this new one is going for.
Coincidentally (or not), this meteorite-laden Speedy is released right before the January 14th reveal of what looks like a meteorite moonphase Speedmaster teased on Omega’s social media (see a peak above). One of the most elegantly built and stealthily over-the-top Speedmasters to date, this new Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 321 in solid platinum is priced at $96,900. Oh, and if you own the previous version on strap, Omega will sell you the platinum bracelet separately. You can learn more at omegawatches.com
