Bulova’s signature 70s-inspired design just got a whole lot funkier.
One of the largest watch trends of 2024 was the resurgence of interest in stone-dial watches, both from the vintage collector front and with contemporary watch releases like the Baltic Prismic Limited Edition. Now, Bulova and the enthusiast-driven community Complecto have united forces to put their own spin on the stone dial on one of Bulova’s 70s-inspired creations – the Super Seville.
I’ve said it before and, with the way this trend keeps cropping up, I will no doubt say it again: stone dials and funky late 60s and 70s design cues are a match made in heaven. So, Bulova’s contemporary Super Seville line, a modern reimagining of the brand’s Super Seville Day-Date of the 1970s, is the perfect vehicle for the stone dial remix. Malachite, Agate, and Lapis have undeniably been the most popular stones that brands have returned to in the neo-stone dial revolution. But, what I find most exciting about this collaboration in particular, is we get a Tigers Eye model, (which Dennison has also done a great job of utilizing) but additional turquoise and “Snowflake Obsidian” options that I have yet to see brands take on.
For those unaware, the NYC-based Complecto’s mission is to make the watch world (which, unfortunately, can lean into elitism) more accessible, and help foster a more diverse, inclusive, and intentional community within the hobby. Given that, it only makes sense that this collab has compellingly unisex sizing. Each of the three models features a retro TV-style case (a recurring trend in and of itself as of late) in versatile 38mm x 37.5mm proportions. Additionally tying into the storytelling of this collection, each stone has been imbued with its symbolic meaning that calls upon different pillars of Complecto’s values, as well as the NYC heritage that Complecto and Bulova share: the turquoise stands for unity and strength in community; the Tiger’s Eye is a symbol of courage; and the Obsidian is for transformation and balance.
All three models are crafted in stainless steel in hues of silver, yellow gold, or rose gold, and paired with matching integrated bracelets, which also adds to the overall '70s appeal. Other than the magnified date window at 3 o’clock and Bulova’s tuning fork motif at 12, the dial layout is minimal, allowing the stone surface to do the talking. I will also remind you here that, given the way the stones are cut, no two dials will be identical, and will each sport a unique and subtle pattern all its own.
For the movement within, Bulova has utilized one of its proprietary Precisionist quartz movements, the NM10, which is accurate up to seconds per year and has a smoothly sweeping hand. All three models in this trio are limited to 718 pieces and will sport their unique serial numbers on their casebacks.
As something of a stone-dial fanatic, I have yet to tire of the trend even as it reaches peak hype. Feel free to check in with me at the end of next year to see if the magic fades for me. For now, I still enjoy seeing brands experiment with something funkier for a change, and playing around with quirkier details in limited-edition formats seems like the way for them to let a bit loose without putting too much at stake.
You can now find all three Bulova x Complecto Limited Edition Super Seville models on Bulova’s website, with prices starting at $1,095.
