Bringing two-tone to solar power is a great idea.
The watch industry is quite a small world, and being part of that world means running into a similar cohort of folks. That also means building relationships, and creating friendships. It turns out that a lot of those people are very creative, and end up making very cool things. That feeling never quite wears off when you see good people you know, good friends, make good stuff. This is a half poetic way of getting to the point that our pals over at Time + Tide (while simultaneously building a watch discovery studio in London) have teamed up with TAG Heuer to release one of the more fun limited editions of 2024.
The best part, is that they have chosen to utilize a criminally underrated watch from TAG as the basis for the Limited Edition: The Solargraph. Now, if you know T&T founder Andrew McUtchen like I do, you know that he’s a Solargraph fanboy, and for good reason. It is one of the brand’s better contemporary dive offerings even if it isn’t a mechanical watch.
So how do you take a known entity and improve on it by way of a limited edition? Well, you inject a bit of two-tone, that's how! And as a fan of two-tone (don’t @ me), I am not complaining about this choice one bit. Using 18K 5N rose gold for the accents against the grade-2 sandblasted titanium case makes for a really striking design.
But of course there is meaning behind it. This watch is officially called the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Solargraph x Time+Tide ‘Sundowner’ and the color choices are meant to be reflective of the Australian outback locale and there is a certain ruggedness and refinement that meet in this design all the way to the NATO strap.
In terms of the “insides,” this watch continues what has made the Solargraph so cool: the TH50-00 movement. Its solar cells live under the semi-translucent dial. They take energy from both natural and artificial light sources. The result is a full charge in 40 hours of exposure which leads to can a 10-month runtime. If you disengage the crown, you can extend that to a whopping four years.
Limited Editions are all about the small details, and here we get that in spades. First is the use of a rose-gold colored lume that plays off the watch's accents (with the minute hand shining in green). But the best execution here has to be the symmetry of logo placement (in rose gold). At 12 o’clock we see the TAG logo and shield, and then down near six o’clock we get the rose gold application of the Time + Tide logo. It looks super sharp.
The 40mm case size paired with the green textile strap make for a handsome watch on its own, but also one that really speaks to the ethos of the T&T team. Turn the watch over and you'll see the company logo engraved on the closed caseback. This Sundowner edition is available beginning today. Let me know in the comments what you think of it.
