As watches go, it’s tough to beat a G-Shock in the dead of summer, and the brand seems to understand that draw. The new Energy Pack collection features a trio of vibrant colors that will look great with a pair of shorts and t-shirt, while the classic 5600 case is a formula that works year ‘round. Minus the shorts. The 5600 is the classic G-Shock form and it has proven endlessly versatile since it was first released in 1987. It does so again here in bright red, blue, and green. It may not be the straightforward approach that Speed enthusiasts are looking for, but these are the releases that will create a new generation of enthusiasts.
The Energy Pack collection is intended for athletes, or active individuals at least, according to G-Shock, as the colors embody the “dynamic rush that athletes know so well.” That part might be a stretch, but these colors work regardless. The blue and the red in particular are rendered in very interesting hues that skew toward higher mid tones that are slightly desaturated. The results look like they could pass for a stick of bubble gum, which won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it’s a super fun rendition for the collector types out there.
Each of the new watches is a DW5600, meaning all three are priced just under $100. This is prime G-Shock, if you ask me, and embodies the lasting appeal of the brand at its core: accessible, tough as nails, and style-conscious. Okay, so maybe these didn’t start out life intending to be style conscious, but they are very much within the fashion zeitgeist these days, and G-Shock has no qualms about leaning into that. There is, quite literally, a GW5600 for all tastes out there, and that’s a great thing.
An emerging trend at the moment happens to be centered around digital and ani-digi watches, particularly from the ‘80s and ‘90s, and the DW5600 feels more relevant than ever before as a result. Thankfully, Casio isn’t afraid to take some swings with these references: we’ve seen some truly creative examples released in recent years, and not just as collaborations. There’s still plenty of ingenuity happening with this watch, from materials to colors, and it continues to prove that it’s an all-time great with each step.
The Energy Pack collection is not limited in nature, and all three are on sale right now from G-Shock for $100.
