News: Citizen Drops Star Wars Rebel Starfighter Box Set

Just dropped by Citizen is its latest collaboration with Star Wars, a partnership that has been going strong for years now. The newest release is this Rebel Starfighter Box Set that pays homage to the iconic X-Wing, arguably the most recognizable ship from the franchise. You’ll remember it was Luke Skywalker who flew an X-Wing to blow up the first Death Star in A New Hope. We also saw Yoda raise an X-Wing out of the depths of a Dagoba swamp in The Empire Strikes Back.

The new Citizen CA0870-43 watch is an Eco-Drive chronograph that is filled with thoughtful design touches that are anything but subtle but don’t go too far into “toy-like” territory. The stainless steel case measures 44mm wide (100 meters of water resistance) and comes on a black leather strap with grey stitching. The 60-minute chronograph-counter subdial at 12 o’clock is finished with a neat Rebellion symbol that is done in gradient shades of orange with white markers (orange and white being the colors of the Rebellion). The 24-hour subdial at 9 o’clock is graced with a more subtle, monochromatic design of the Death Star and I personally love the blue target cursor centered on it, because it’s purely an aesthetic choice that reminds you which side you’re on. At 6 o’clock is my favorite part of the dial, the seconds subdial, which features an X-wing motif and a contrasting orange hand. The color scheme comes together really well against the dial and is complemented by the orange and blue touches on the bezel.

Of course, there is more on the caseback, which has the X-Wing overlaid over the Rebel Alliance motif. Again, the color contrast of blue against the bright rich oranges looks just great here. Of course, this is a box set and not just a watch so it also comes with a cool looking, shield-shaped pin with a retro-futuristic X-Wing design that looks so good that I wish it had made its way onto the watch.

There have been a lot of Citizen X Star Wars collaboration watches over the years but this new CA0870-43 Rebel Starfighter might be the best one to date. The reason for this has as much to do with the design as it does with the strategic use of vivid colors set against an otherwise muted dial.
