Rory McIlroy Celebrates Masters Win With An Omega Speedmaster Snoopy On His Wrist

The conclusion of the 89th Masters Tournament on Sunday at Augusta National was one of heightened emotion, not only for Rory McIlroy’s historic win but for the audience who had been biting their nails on the journey there. The tournament ultimately moved to the first sudden-death playoff the Masters had seen since 2017, with Rory McIlroy pinned and ultimately winning against Justin Rose for the 2025 title, despite four Double Bogeys. Thus, after an 11-year championship gap, McIlroy was awarded the famed green Masters jacket and became the sixth player in history to achieve a career Grand Slam. But, given that McIlroy is not just a golf guy, he also happens to be a watch guy, we have to talk about the watch that the Irish golfer wore as he donned his green jacket: the Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Silver Snoopy.

Now positioned among the other Grand Slam greats — including Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods, to be exact — McIlroy accepted the green jacket of his Masters win (which is Pantone 342, for those curious) with another icon in his company, although somewhat hidden under his sleeve – yes, I’m talking about Snoopy here. It’s no surprise that McIlroy would be wearing an Omega on such an occasion, given that he’s been an ambassador for the brand since 2013, but it does strike as a bit unconventional (and a lot of fun) that instead of the tribute model that the brand made for him, he would instead go for a model decked out with the world’s most famous beagle. 

On the watch in question, Snoopy, in an astronaut suit no less, sits jovially in the chronograph subdial at 6 o’clock. For those uninitiated in the Snoopy-meets-space-exploration lore, the Silver Snoopy Award was established in 1968 to honor NASA’s Space Flight awareness program to honor employees and crew members who had made outstanding contributions to the safety and success of missions. And, in a somewhat unconventional move, Omega was awarded the Silver Snoopy award in the 1970s in honor of its Speedmaster’s longstanding connection to astronauts, as well as its role in returning astronauts of the Apollo 13 mission back to Earth. Thus, the connection between Snoopy, NASA, and the Speedmaster was born. 

The Snoopy Speedmaster at hand was released 50 years after OMEGA received the Silver Snoopy Award, in 2020. It measures 41mm and is made of steel, mixing a white dial with blue hues on the tachymeter bezel, applied indices, hands, and the tricompax chronograph subdials. But the Snoopy-loving fun isn’t limited to the dial – with a flip of the watch, you’ll find a second Snoopy in a rocketship on the caseback, cruising through space above a large moon, along with the earth that rotates in time with the seconds hand. And, when chronograph functions are engaged, Snoopy actually is sent in motion with the help of a nearly invisible “magic hand” mechanism. It’s fun with an extra side of fun, if you ask me. Additionally, this watch is powered by the manually-wound Omega 3861 caliber with a power reserve of 50 hours. 

Time will tell if Snoopy makes an appearance at any more high-profile golf-world events, but for now, we can just thoroughly enjoy McIlroy’s playful watch decision and celebrate his remarkable victory – perhaps with a tall glass of Guinness or two.
