The Breitling Superocean Heritage has been around since 2007 and stands as one of the brand’s most popular offerings due to its classical, vintage-inspired design and broad range of size options. The collection was updated in 2017, with the Superocean Heritage II, and in 2025 we have gotten the third major update to the collection that now includes improvements throughout as well as the use of the B31 movement. And perhaps most appealing is the long-awaited introduction of a 40mm case size. While Breitling refers to the Superocean Heritage as a “Sea Watch,” these are all as robust and resilient as any dive watch.
There are a total of six watches in the new Breitling Superocean Heritage collection, all of which have 200 meters of water resistance: the 42mm chronograph outfitted with the manufacture Caliber 01; three time-and-date models in 40mm, 42mm, and 44mm case sizes outfitted with the B31 movement; and a 36mm time-and-date model outfitted with the Caliber 10 automatic movement. The sixth is a special limited edition done with surfer and longtime brand ambassador Kelly Slater, who co-designed a 40mm model. Before getting into these models, let’s discuss what’s new overall for this update of the Superocean Heritage.
First off, you’ll notice the sharper hour markers and especially that new 12 o’clock marker, which has a circle with a sharp index cutting through it — a throwback to the original Superocean. I think this will likely be one of the more controversial new design decisions but, personally, I have to say that I quite like it and think it adds a level of personality to distinguish the collection from the vast array of competitors. There are other subtle dial changes like a printed seconds track on the outer circumference, less dial text overall, more pronounced (and period-accurate) hour and minutes hands, and a lollipop seconds hand. Everything just looks a little bit neater and more attractive but without totally straying from the collection’s design language.
There are also updates to the case, most notably with the new lugs, which no longer protrude slightly outwards and thus help with keeping size under control. The bracelet and strap also neatly integrate into the case now, whereas the previous generation had more traditional straight lugs. Really, everything is much closer in design to the Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 now, which is definitely a good thing. Finally, the mesh bracelet is excellent and has a novel removable link feature that makes it much easier to size compared to traditional mesh bracelets, which need to be cut.
The chronograph now comes in a 42mm-wide case that is much more in line with contemporary tastes compared to the previous generation’s 44mm case. The case measures 14.55mm thick, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 49.56mm, which is right within that 50mm lug-to-lug line when things really begin to wear quite large. The Breitling manufacture Caliber 01 is unchanged and operates at 4 Hz with a 70-hour power reserve. It’s also noteworthy that the Caliber 01 is COSC-certified and is a column-wheel, vertical-clutch chronograph.
Aesthetically, the twin register layout is much cleaner than the outgoing tricompax dial that had the date window wedged in between 4 and 5 o’clock. There are three color variants: blue with matching bezel; green with matching bezel; or a really attractive black and red gold two-tone model with matching bezel and gold crown/pushers. All are available on a matching rubber strap or the aforementioned mesh bracelet.
The classic Breitling Superocean Heritage time-and-date models, outfitted with the new B31 movement, come in these three case sizes that really do cover just about every preference one could have (and if not, there’s the smaller 36mm model). The new 40mm is just about perfect, measuring 40mm wide and a slim 11.73mm thick with a 48.2mm lug-to-lug measurement; the 42mm model measures 42mm wide and 12.03mm thick with a 49.55 lug-to-lug measurement; and the 44mm model measures 44mm wide and 12.17mm thick with a 52.44mm lug-to-lug measurement. These are much slimmer than the outgoing 44mm model which measured 14.55mm thick or the outgoing 42mm model, which measured 14.35mm thick.
These three sizes are all outfitted with the B31 movement that debuted inside the Top Time earlier this year. This movement was actually developed with AMT (Sellita’s high-end division) and has some impressive specs, most notably with accuracy, which comes in at -4 to +6 seconds/day and is tested to the equivalent of 16 years of use. The B31 operates at 4 Hz and has a 78-hour power reserve in addition to a hacking seconds function. Finishing is also very nice, with Geneva stripes throughout and a skeletonized rotor with branded engraving.
The Breitling Superocean Heritage B31 40 is available in either black with a matching black bezel or green with a matching green bezel, both available on a rubber strap or mesh bracelet. The Superocean Heritage B31 42 is available in black, blue, green, and black with red gold accents on rubber strap or mesh bracelet. Finally, the Superocean Heritage 44 is available in black, green, or blue with red gold accents on rubber strap or mesh bracelet.
We can’t forget the Superocean Heritage B31 40 Kelly Slater edition, which shares the same specs as the standard 40 but has a rather beautiful blue dial with a stamped “tropical foliage” pattern that looks so much better in person than it did in the stock photos. I am a huge fan of this model and it might actually be my favorite from the collection.
Finally, we have the smallest addition to the Breitling Superocean Heritage family, the 36mm model. This one measures 36mm wide and 10.42mm thick with a lug-to-lug measurement of 42.84mm. This is really a unisex piece with those specs, though I might lean towards the 40mm model, personally (and I like small watches). Here we have the Breitling Caliber 10 which operates at 4 Hz and has a 42-hour power reserve. The Superocean Heritage Automatic 36 is available in blue or a fun, minty shade of green on rubber strap or mesh bracelet.
The new Breitling Superocean Heritage collection is a marked improvement over the outgoing model and it’s clear that the brand has a keen understanding of what contemporary buyers are looking for (even against the reigning king Rolex). The Superocean Heritage Chronograph 42 is priced at $8,900 on rubber strap and $9,200 on mesh bracelet for the blue and green models while the black and red-gold two-tone model is priced at $10,100 on strap and $10,400 on bracelet. The Superocean Heritage B31 40, 42, and 44 are all priced at $6,200 on strap and $6,500 on bracelet, while the black and red-gold 42 is priced at $7,700 on strap and $8,000 on bracelet; and the blue and red-gold 44 is priced at $7,900 on strap and $8,200 on bracelet. The Kelly Slater model is limited to 500 pieces and priced at $6,450 on strap and $6,750 on bracelet. Finally, the Superocean Heritage Automatic 36 is priced at $5,250 on strap and $5,500 on bracelet.
