Hamilton Celebrates 250 Years of America With A Revival of A Field Watch Icon

Hamilton’s watchmaking history is a quintessentially American one. As the U.S of A. is ringing in its 250th birthday this year, it only makes sense for the brand to celebrate the occasion with proper fanfare. Now, we know exactly what they have in store. Today, Hamilton launches a specialized take on one of its rarest and most significant military watches (the FAPD 5101 Type 1, to be specific), off like a firework. Dubbed the Khaki Field Mechanical 36mm “America 250” Anniversary Edition, Hamilton has gifted us with a faithful heritage recreation, staying true to the signature design of the watch that inspired it while adding modern specs along the way.

As always, before I dive into the specifics of this watch in particular, we have to lay a sound historical foundation of the vintage piece that informed it. The FAPD 5101 Type 1 is so rarefied because its production run was so limited. Getting its name from the Field and Aviation Personnel department, this watch was produced for US Air Force Navigators during the Vietnam conflict for one month and one month only – September 1970. 

A larger (and more accurate) iteration of Hamilton’s Field watches produced to meet MIL-W-46374 spec standards, the watch in question is also regarded for its unique case finishing. Measuring 36mm in steel, the FAPD 5101 case boasts a “Parkerized” finish. Essentially, the steel undergoes a chemical phosphate process to achieve increased corrosion resistance, while also making the metal less reflective in order to be more fully concealed on the battlefield. Parkerization is not limited to watches – many combat knives and tools also utilize it to make essential weapons and gear more stealthy. 

Key marks of field watches of the era, like soldered bars for securing straps, easily legible dial design, and acrylic crystal, were all well at play in the case of the FAPD 5101. A more specific detail to this watch lay inside, with the use of the Caliber 684 movement – a modified version of the ETA 2391 with expanded application for aviation navigation. This caliber was only ever used in this watch and featured a direct drive sweeping seconds hand with hacking capability, a fine adjustment micro-regulating screw for increased accuracy, and was all protected by an antimagnetic dust cover for added environmental protection. 

Because of its extremely limited production, the FAPD 5101 has taken on a grail status in the collector community. One of those key pieces of military history, surviving pieces are extremely rare, and among the most sought after of their kind on the vintage market. 

At first glance, Hamilton’s strengths in the heritage reissue category make themselves immediately apparent. I mean, we’re just about in 1:1 territory here. The 36mm diameter of the original is faithfully maintained, complemented by a 10.2mm case height, 46.2mm lug-to-lug, with an 18mm lug width. The tool-forward ethos of the FAPD 5101 has, thankfully, gone unchanged. Even the soldered, fixed strap bars are still accounted for. Though this modern rendition hasn’t undergone Parkerization, Hamilton carries on that spirit with an overall matte, glare-resistant finish. 

The theme of verisimilitude continues with the box-style acrylic crystal protecting the dial (which is a key part of where that elevated case profile comes into play). But, it will be music to your ears to hear that Hamilton has mitigated one of the main pain points of its Khaki Field collection, that being the crystal’s weakness against glare and various light reflections. This time around, the brand has added both a scratch-resistant coating and an anti-fingerprint treatment into the mix, which has significantly mitigated the glare gripes in the process. 

This watch notably features expanded water resistance as compared with its other Khaki Field family members, achieving a depth rating of 100 meters. As part of the anniversary edition, this watch comes with two strap options (an olive green NATO-style in cotton canvas and a brown calf leather strap with an aged finish), which feature signed pin buckles with a matte finish, and a branded military case. As another specialized touch, the solid caseback is engraved with anniversary details in a style that further boosts the military-issued vibes.

The easily legible, no-nonsense design principles that mark field watches of the era are alive and well in the dial department of this “America 250” Khaki Field. The most obvious difference between this watch and its vintage source of inspiration is, of course, that we have the very contemporary introduction of branding on the dial (given that military-issued watches were intentionally brand-less). But Hamilton has kept it chill and minimal, and has actually gone with a decidedly retro typeface that doesn’t detract from the intention of this reissue.

The dial layout (logo aside) stays true to the established codes of the FAPD 5101. Against a black backdrop, everything sits in nice contrast, from the larger Arabic numerals marking the hours and the smaller numerals closer to the dial’s center detailing military time, to the white minutes track. Above the hour markers at five-minute increments, triangular markers have gotten a healthy dose of fauxtina, along with the arrow tip of the seconds hand,  which further adds to the vintage charm this watch so effectively captures.

Inside, Hamilton has gone with the manually-wound H-50 caliber. Oft used throughout the Khaki Field collection, the H-50 utilizes the ETA C07.701 as its base,  has a 3 Hz frequency, 80-hour power reserve, hacking, and is packed with a Nivachron balance spring. However, as yet another callback to the FAPD 5101, the movement within this model also features a protective dust cover.

Hamilton proves time and time again its skill in the field watch category, and all things considered, there are few brands that can go toe-to-toe with it in the genre. This limited edition adds the much-needed, period-accurate-sized heritage reissue into its repertoire that has notably been missing up until now. The brand has leaned all the way into recreation faithfulness for this one, and, given the rarity of FAPD 5101s on the secondary market, this seems like the most logical way to go about bringing the spirit of the vintage gem into today’s watchmaking landscape.
