TAG Heuer has been the Official Timekeeper and Scorer of the Indianapolis 500 since 2004, continuing and building upon a legacy of motorsport timing that the Swiss brand has been forging since the 1960s. As one might expect, that legacy has included a number of special-edition timepieces associated with the annual competition known as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” run at the storied “Brickyard,” the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Today, ahead of this year’s Indy 500 on May 24, TAG Heuer announced the latest one: the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph X Indy 500.

TAG Heuer introduced its original Formula 1 collection in 1986, and rolled out the newest models in 2025 — the latter collection defined by their unisex 38mm cases, their use of a new, durable but lightweight composite material called TH-Polylight, and their avant-garde light-powered quartz movements. This model, which is limited to 1,110 pieces, is the first in the revamped series to pay homage to the Indy 500 and its historic visual hallmarks. The 38mm case is made of sandblasted stainless steel, water-resistant to 100 meters, and topped off with a “fat” nonreflective sapphire crystal. The solid, screwed caseback features a relief Indy 500 logo along with a classical checkered flag motif, on a brickyard texture that evokes the speedway's legendary finish line. The steel crown screws securely into the case’s flank at 3 o’clock, guarded by shoulder-like crown protectors.

The notched, “daisy-shaped” bidirectional bezel, with its 60-minute scale delineated in 5-minute increments, is made of the aforementioned TH-Polylight material, an organic polymer engineered to allow for multiple bright and even pastel colorways — as seen in the Formula 1 models introduced into the regular collection in 2025 — but executed in a sober black for this limited edition. The black opaline dial, bordered by a brown flange, hosts a combination of geometrical hour markers, including pentagonal markers at 12, 9, and 6 o’clock reminiscent of the TAG Heuer shield emblem, along with a date window at the 3 o’clock position.

The Mercedes-style hour hand and sword-shaped minute hand indicate the time, while a red lacquered hand sweeps over the dial to track the running seconds. The dial’s surface sports a subtle “brickyard” texture echoing the motif on the caseback and features an Indy 500 logo above the 6 o’clock position, balancing out the TAG Heuer logo and “Formula 1” text just south of 12 o’clock. The hands and indexes are all coated with white Super-LumiNova that glows bright green in the dark.

Humming behind the caseback is TAG Heuer’s revolutionary, solar-powered quartz movement, Caliber TH50-00. Developed exclusively for the brand in a partnership with Swiss movement specialist La Joux-Perret, the movement requires only a one-minute exposure to sunlight — any light, actually — to charge up with enough power for an entire day; after a full charge of about 40 hours in the sun, it will run for up to 10 months without any additional light exposure. Its ultra-efficient rechargeable battery can even power up after just 10 seconds to restart a watch that has stopped ticking, and its accumulator boasts a lifespan of up to 15 years.

The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph X Indy 500 is delivered on a three-link steel bracelet with the same sandblasted finish as the case (TAG Heuer describes the effect as “recall[ing] the functional surfaces of racing machines) and equipped with a steel folding clasp with a double-safety-pushbutton closure and link-extension adjustment. The watch retails for $2,250 in the U.S.
