Few brands can match the watchmaking credentials of Jaeger-LeCoultre. This nearly 200 year old manufacture has been a powerhouse of movement production for generations, creating more than 1,400 calibers throughout its history. While icons like the Reverso understandably carry much of the brand’s modern identity, there has never been a shortage of remarkable watches within the JLC catalog.
But even the greatest watchmakers can have gaps.
As collecting preferences have shifted toward more casual, everyday watches, sports models have come to dominate the conversation. Look at the industry’s most successful pieces today, and many fall into one of three categories: divers, chronographs, or versatile everyday watches with enough sportiness to transition seamlessly into a more casual world.
JLC has certainly had answers in these areas. The Polaris collection carries the brand’s sporting heritage, while the Master Control line represents its more traditional side. Yet there was always a missing piece, a watch that could combine the refinement and technical elegance JLC is known for with the versatility modern collectors increasingly demand.
With the newly introduced Master Control Chronometre collection, JLC is looking to fill that void. And after spending time with what I consider the most compelling version, the Master Control Chronometre Power Reserve, I finally had the chance to see if this was the watch the brand was missing.
The collection arrives in three variations: the date model, the Power Reserve with its distinctive two-register layout, and the Perpetual Calendar. The date and perpetual calendar versions are available in either stainless steel or 18k pink gold. My time, however, was spent primarily with the Power Reserve, the version that, to me, feels the most unique in an increasingly crowded category.
