TAG Heuer Unveils New Carrera Chronograph Sport Editions Ahead of Spanish Grand Prix

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Sport, a modern evolution of the brand’s iconic motorsport-inspired Carrera from 1963, debuted in 2020, TAG Heuer’s 160th anniversary year, alongside the decidedly more understated Carrera Chronograph. The differences between the two models has always been clear: the Sport editions were larger (44mm vs. 42mm for the Chronograph), more tool-oriented (with a wide tachymeter-scale bezel as opposed to the Chronograph’s thin bezel with no scale) and with a more pronounced, sharply angled approach to the dial details. Today in Madrid, as it kicks off its inaugural year as Title Partner of the Formula 1 TAG Heuer Gran Premio de España, aka the Spanish Grand Prix, TAG Heuer has introduced the newest generation of Carrera Chronograph Sport editions, after giving the model what the brand refers to as “a full rethinking” in terms of wearability, refinement, and racing spirit. 

The primary change is in the reduced dimensions of the case to 42mm from 44mm, now matching the diameter of the more elegant, non-sport Chronograph models, albeit still larger than the more vintage-inspired Carrera Glassbox models, which come in at 39mm. The Chronograph Sport’s lug-to-lug length has also been shaved down accordingly, from 49.8mm to 48.6mm, and the case thickness has been slimmed down from 15.48mm to 14.17mm. Both are in the service of better ergonomics on the wrist and of giving the watch a more “compact” silhouette. 

The redesign of the case includes a new, brushed finish on the sides for a more technical character, and a streamlining of the bezel, which combines a steel cradle framing a polished ceramic insert color-matched to the dial. The bezel itself is thinner, while still hosting the racing-inspired tachymeter scale that has been essential to the Carrera’s DNA over the decades, with its functional raison d’etre of measuring speeds in concert with the chronograph hands. The watch’s intended “tension between elegance and sport,” as TAG Heuer refers to it, is also evident on the chronograph pushers, whose forms draw inspiration from a car’s pistons and other high-performance engine components. In another nod to detail, the pushers’ heads are lacquered to echo the main color of each model’s dial. 

Speaking of engines, the high-performance machine inside this watch’s meticulously re-engineered chassis remains the automatic, in-house Caliber TH20-00, an evolution of the acclaimed Heuer 02. Delivering a lengthy power reserve of 80 hours when fully wound, and visible behind a sapphire exhibition caseback, this 33-jewel movement incorporates a column-wheel and vertical-clutch mechanism for the built-in stopwatch, which tallies elapsed times to ¼-second, 30-minute, and 12-hour totals. The movement’s bidirectional rotor (which winds the mainspring faster than the unidirectional rotor on its predecessor, the Heuer 02) is openworked in the form of the TAG Heuer shield logo. Another racing-derived detail you’ll notice on the back side of the case is a small Victory Wreath engraving on the upper right lug, now a signature element of the Carrera family.

The bracelet, with its familiar H-shaped links, has also been refined, now tapering for a more comfortable and aesthetically elegant presentation. In addition to its push-button-operated folding safety clasp, it’s also been fitted with an adjustment system that allows wearers easy, tool-free access to changing the bracelet’s fit. TAG Heuer is also offering all these models on perforated, contrast-stitched leather straps, which take their cues from the design of vintage racing gloves and which fasten to the wrist with a new pin buckle.

TAG Heuer is offering the new Carrera Chronograph Sport editions in what is sure to be a crowd-pleasing range of colorways. All the dials feature yet another design change from their 44mm predecessors, with applied Arabic numerals replacing the applied indexes of the previous Sport generation. Doubling down on the concept of this watch as chronograph first, time-teller second, the numerals depict a 60-minute scale rather than a 12-hour one. The variations include a sunray blue dial with silver subdials and gray details; a teal green dial with silver counters and gray accents; a silver “panda” dial with black subdials; and an opaline black dial with black counters and red details. All the dials have a reworked flange, white tachymeter scale markings, and a date window at 6 o’clock.
