Short on Time
Introduction: The Boutique Battlefield
If you were to sit in a boutique and have the sales associate slide two black-dial watches across the tray before you, both may look completely identical to the naked eye, even if they’re not. They might reflect the overhead lights with the exact same sheen, but the price tag on one is double that of the other. Why? You’ve just run into one of watchmaking’s most misunderstood price dividers. One is a lacquer-dial watch, and the other is a true, kiln-fired enamel-dial watch.
As collectors, we spend an inordinate amount of time arguing over the minutiae of a case finishing or the beveling of a movement bridge. But when it comes to dials, we tend to accept a watch at face value. A glossy dial is a glossy dial. Mechanically, historically, and financially, however, the difference between an enamel and lacquer dial couldn’t be further apart. The material a brand chooses to employ dictates absolutely everything about the production volume and price of a watch, as well as its longevity on the wrist.
Truth be told, understanding the difference between these two disciplines will elevate your watch collection experience, a little like how understanding the differences between movements does. So, let us strip away the brochure jargon and get into the real truth of how these dials are actually made, and why you should care to learn the differences between both before you make a purchase.
Lacquer-Dial Watches
For decades, a lacquer dial has been unfairly cast as the cheap, mass-produced alternative to enamel, and in some cases, that’s absolutely true. A lot of entry-level watch manufacturers use a quick spray of synthetic resin to achieve a shiny finish and call it a day. But to dismiss all lacquer as the budget option is to turn a blind eye to one of the most complex and time-consuming dial-making techniques used in the industry.

Consider the high-end Swiss approach. Producing a flawless, mirror-polished lacquer dial, like those seen on a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute or a modern Omega Aqua Terra, requires a painstaking process of applying microscopic layers of colored paint and clear resin, one on top of the other. Between each application, the dial must be cured, usually under ultraviolet light, and then polished entirely by the hand of an artisan. Crucially, if a single speck of dust lands on the dial during this process, the whole thing is destined for the trash bin. But when done properly, it takes hours of polishing to achieve that deep, wet look, allowing brands to achieve vibrant Pantone colors that are completely impossible to replicate in an enamel kiln. Furthermore, the cured resin retains a tiny bit of flexibility, so if you drop a lacquered watch, the dial is not going to shatter into a thousand pieces. It might dent or scratch, but it will survive.

Then, we have an exception – the Japanese Urushi lacquer. If you’ve ever handled a high-end Grand Seiko, a Credor, or a Kurono Tokyo watch, you’ll have had the pleasure of experiencing one of these dials for yourself. Urushi is tapped from the sap of the toxic Chinese lacquer tree and is highly poisonous in its liquid state. Artisans who paint these dials literally build up a physical immunity to it over years of exposure. The sap is painted onto the dial base in thin layers using a brush made from the hair of a rat. Between each layer, the dial must cure in a highly humid environment, drying by absorbing moisture from the air. The result is a dial that has an organic, almost warm depth to it that deepens further when it reacts in certain lights.

Enamel-Dial Watches
When we talk about high-end dial treatments, we’re usually talking about Grand Feu enamel, which translates roughly to "Great Fire." This is a glass, not a paint or resin. The process begins with raw silica, which looks a bit like coarse sand. It’s mixed with various metal oxides to create color (iron for gray, copper for blue, and so on and so forth). The mixture is then ground down using a mortar and pestle until it forms a fine, dust-like powder. The dial maker then takes a base plate, usually made of copper, silver, or gold, and carefully dusts this glass powder over the surface.

Once this stage is complete, the dial is placed into a kiln pre-heated to around 800º Celsius (about 1,470º Fahrenheit), at which metal oxides ignite and the silica melts, fusing into a solid layer of colored glass. This firing process takes mere minutes, but the dial maker is required to pull the piece from the fire at the exact second the glass melt is completely smooth. Leave it in too long, and the base metal melts or warps, ruining the dial. Pull it out too soon, and the surface is pockmarked and cloudy. A Grand Feu dial requires multiple firings to build up the depth of color, every trip into the kiln risking complete failure, since the glass can crack as it cools at any point. Small trapped air bubbles can suddenly burst, too, leaving craters in the surface, and the color can mutate randomly because of tiny fluctuations in the kiln's temperature. In fact, the rejection rate for a true Grand Feu enamel dial is thought to be anywhere from 60-75%. So, for every 10 dials a master artisan attempts to create, seven are thrown directly into the trash.

A properly fired Grand Feu dial will never fade, nor will it yellow under ultraviolet light, and it won’t tarnish or degrade from moisture either. If you look at a Breguet pocket watch from the late 1700s, the enamel dial looks just as pristine today as the day it was pulled from the kiln. The only caveat? Glass breaks, and if you drop an enamel-dialed watch onto a hard bathroom tile, the shock can crack the surface, meaning you’d either have to live with the spiderweb fracture, or buy a whole new dial.
The 'Cold Enamel' Controversy
If you’ve spent a considerable amount of time reading press releases or articles, you may have stumbled across the phrase "cold enamel." There is, to be frank, no such thing as "cold" enamel: the entire definition of enamel requires glass powder to be melted at extreme temperatures. So what this terminology actually refers to is an epoxy resin. Some brands will mix high-grade epoxy with color pigments and pour it onto a dial blank, where it cures at room temperature and polishes up to a beautiful glossy finish. From a manufacturing standpoint, it’s cheap and has a 0% failure rate, making it a high-quality resin dial for a watch in the $500-2000 price bracket. Still, the wording can often mislead collectors and can be seen as an attempt to borrow prestige from the true time-consuming enameling technique. As a collector, you need to be somewhat protective of your wallet. If a spec sheet says cold enamel, just read it as resin, and judge the asking price accordingly. Do not pay Grand Feu money for cured plastic.
Under the Loupe: Spotting the Difference
So, how do you determine exactly what you are looking at without taking a hammer to the dial to see if it shatters? Well, you can pull out a loupe and examine the dial closely. These materials quickly give away their secrets. First, look for the meniscus effect, because enamel is melted glass with surface tension, so it pools slightly around cutouts. At the center hand pinion or a recessed subdial, true enamel forms a soft, rounded downward slope. A lacquer dial, which is cut after curing, will instead show a sharp, 90-degree edge.

Secondly, examine the numerals. On a lacquer dial, pad-printed ink will sit on top of the glossy surface, whereas traditional enamel numerals are applied with enamel paste and fired one last time. This process causes them to sink into the top glaze, so they won't sit on the surface. Instead, they’ll appear permanently embedded under a clear layer.
The Verdict: Which Should You Choose?
When you weigh the pros and cons of an enamel-dial versus a lacquer-dial watch, you’re really just left with a very personal choice. Neither of these materials is inherently wrong. It all comes down to what you value as a collector and how you intend to wear the watch.
If you want a dial with unmatched shock resistance and a vivid color, then a high-end lacquer-dial watch is the best choice, since it will offer a wearing experience that is just as valid and visually arresting as any kiln-fired alternative. Lacquer dials are robust, they’re beautiful, and they deliver a mirror-like perfection. However, if you’re a romantic and you want a watch that carries the prestige and artistry of a time-honored technique, there’s no substitute for true enamel. Yes, it is fragile, and you’ll likely pay a premium for one, but when you look down at a pristine white Grand Feu dial, you’re instantly reminded that this sort of dial will outlast your own lifetime. Either way, choose the one that makes you want to stare at your wrist when you already know what time it is. Ultimately, it’s the only metric that really matters.
