Seiko continues to flesh out its Astron collection this week with the addition of three new regular-production references, and one limited-edition reference. The new watches use Seiko’s excellent Caliber 5X83 that is solar powered, and provides dual- time and chronograph complications. This configuration currently exists within the Astron collection, but the new references being introduced today bring a new case finish and bezel into the mix, elevating the formula to a new level. The biggest feature here, however, is a new titanium bezel assembly with a sapphire crystal insert, a relatively uncommon approach, and one that works surprisingly well with the Astron design language.
You’ll find a range of case sizes in the Astron collection when it comes to 5X83- equipped references, and these new watches push it a step further, measuring in at 44.1mm in diameter, and 14.4mm in thickness. Like existing dual-time chronograph references in the Astron range, these watches are constructed from titanium that’s received a super-hard coating to make them scratch-resistant. Additionally, this is an integrated bracelet design so take those numbers with a grain of salt. It won’t wear small, but it won’t be quite as intimidating as it may seem on paper.
The feature set of the 5X83 offers plenty to nerd out over. This is a GPS solar movement that’s accurate to +/-15 seconds per month when not receiving a signal. Functionality includes a perpetual calendar with day and date display, dual-time display, chronograph timing, and power reserve indication, among many other features. There’s a lot going on here and Seiko has managed to design a readily legible display with which to use these features. The chronograph can time to 1/20-second increments, while the bezel is indexed to 60 minutes in five-minute increments.
The bezel takes on a unique appearance thanks to the sapphire crystal inlay with a contrasting titanium bezel assembly. There’s noticeable depth here when viewed at an angle, and it should retain its color and appearance indefinitely. This is paired with a newly finished case featuring polished and brushed surfaces in a geometric design with no sign of curvature to be found. The end link of the integrated bracelet tucks all the way up and under the bezel, with two polished center links bringing some contrast to the design. The result is what Seiko is calling its “most sophisticated design in the Seiko Astron collection.”
There's a load of tech jammed into the 5X83 movement, and while it comes at a cost, this watch is really for the tech junkies out there that will take the time to learn the ins and outs of every bell and whistle listed on the spec sheet. There are three regular-production references being introduced: the SSH175 ($3,100) with a blue dial and bezel; the SSH177 ($3,100) with a grey dial and black bezel; and the SSH179 ($3,300) with a black dial, bezel, and case. In addition, Seiko is releasing a limited-edition reference SSH180 ($3,300) with gold accents and a black center link in the bracelet.
