A pair of high-end luxury sports watches in green and black
Yes, it’s once again time for a new Omega release. In fact, today we are talking about not one but two solid-gold divers on a rubber strap. Yes, we’ve seen a slew of Seamasters in recent months, with the titanium-and-bronze-gold model and that pair of no-dates, but those are solidly in the "entry-level" category in comparison with these latest new releases. The first is one of the more casual “F U” watches of 2024: the black Seamaster 300M in Sedna gold which really goes toe-to-toe with one of my favorite ostentatious divers, the Rolex Yacht-Master 42. And then there’s the second one, which is done in green with a solid Moonshine gold case that, much like a green Goyard wallet, is the “Color of Money” flex that nobody needs but I, for one, certainly want.
I brought up the Yacht-Master 42 not just because of the obvious and never-ending Rolex vs. Omega debate but because of how similar the watches are. On one hand, the Yacht-Master 42 has a 42mm yellow (or white) gold case with 100 meters of water resistance, outfitted with that truly excellent Oysterflex bracelet with a price of $30,300. On the other hand, you have either of these new Seamasters in either a 42mm-wide Sedna gold or Moonshine gold (these are proprietary Omega alloys for rose-gold and a paler-than-average yellow gold, respectively) case with a more robust 300 meters of water resistance, on an also-excellent black or green rubber strap with a price of $29,300. Once you’re spending more than the cost of an entry-level Toyota Prius on a watch, that $1,000 price delta probably doesn’t matter much.
All this is to say that the choice really comes down to a matter of taste. I would argue that while the Seamaster 300M would be considered slightly less iconic than the Submariner, it certainly is far more recognizable and storied than the Yacht-Master 42. While I could personally do without the helium escape valve, the ceramic dials with laser-engraved waves and more subtle 6 o’clock date window go a long way in making the case for the Seamaster. At the same time, there is the 40mm Yacht-Master in Everose gold (Rolex’s take on rose gold) for those who prefer a smaller case than these 42mm options. That one will also set you back $30,000.
My point here is that these high-end divers done in precious metal on rubber straps are all about emotion and an individual’s taste. It’s not about one’s ego being tied to a brand because this is not someone’s first, second, or third watch and I'd bet that, in many cases, such a watch is not even close to being the priciest piece in that hypothetical buyer’s collection.
Before closing, I suppose it’s important to get into the actual details of these new Seamasters. They both share the same specs, with a case measuring 42mm wide and 13.7mm thick, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 49.9mm. They are outfitted with the METAS-certified Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8801 movement that operates at 3.5 Hz with a 55-hour power reserve. This movement also boasts a solid Sedna gold balance bridge and rotor.
The Omega Seamaster 300M Ref. 210.62.42.20.10.001 in green with Moonshine gold case and the Seamaster 300M Ref. 210.62.42.20.01.002 in black with Sedna gold case are real luxury sports watches with a real luxury sport-watch price, at $29,300 each. You can learn more at omegawatches.com.
