Arguably one of the most important moves in recent years for Japan’s G-Shock has been its expansion into the use of metals across existing collections. The GMW Full Metal collection has tapped into something seriously cool, expressing the Casio-owned brand’s old-school digital aesthetic through a very cyberpunk-esque material selection. It has been a winning fusion, and G-Shock has slowly expanded the use of metal into other collections as well. Most recently, we’ve seen ther launch of a new series that sees the stuff used in the bracelet and the bezel. This is the new GM2110, and it’s the most accessible full-metal application to date.
Technically, the new GM2100 watches are a part of the G-Steel collection, not the Full Metal collection, and as such they come with an attractive $300 price tag. We’ve seen a similar approach with the “Casioak” GMB2100, which is the Bluetooth-equipped version of this design. These newest models strip things down to the basics, and come in a slew of vibrant new colors in the process. These watches feature a steel bezel wrapped around a glass-reinforced resin body, which should keep the weight to a minimum while providing a more premium look.
There are five new dial colors being offered here: orange, lime green, silver, sky blue, and navy. The silver offers a full-monotone look that goes pretty hard, but the bright colors feel the most “G-Shock,” if you ask me. The dial itself is an ana-digi affair, with a digital function set appearing at the bottom right of the dial. These are G-Shocks, so you know the story here, and the steel exterior gets the same shock resistance testing as the synthetic interior. These are easy watches to understand, and even easier ones to wear.
I like that G-Shock is bringing its steel-case options to broader audiences at new price points, and offering alternate takes on some classic shapes and dials in the process. Further, these smaller, thinner (11.8mm) cases are actually super-wearable, which is in contrast to some of the more robust G-Shock offerings further up the food chain. These watches are a great middle ground as a result.
The GM2110 is available at retailers now, priced from $300.
