With Thanksgiving behind us, holiday season 2024 has officially kicked off. We’ve got a lot of special content planned for the coming weeks but Black Friday calls for some special deals you can read all about here. As for the watches, here are some of our picks categorized within four popular categories of field watches, dive watches, chronographs, and travel watches. Of course these are just a small selection, so if you don't find something that piques your interest here, explore our full holiday gift guide. We know you’re busy on this Black Friday so let’s get straight to the watches!
Price: Case Size: 33 mm Thickness: 8.3mm Lug Width: 20mm Crystal: Sapphire Water Resistance:50m Movement: F06.105
This year, Hamilton surprised us on two fronts. First came the Khaki Field Quartz, a new edition of the Khaki line that throws back to vintage ‘80s Hamilton (with sizes in both 33 and 38mm) down to the classic Khaki wordmark.
Price: $895 (strap) $945 (bracelet) Case Size: 38 mm Thickness: 11.1mm Lug to Lug:44.7 mm Lug Width: 20mm Crystal: Sapphire Water Resistance:100m Movement: H-10 Automatic
The follow up was the Hamilton Murph 38 which brought two new editions to the collection that originated in the 2014 film Interstellar. The first was the classic black dial version on a brand new bracelet giving the watch a whole new sense of versatility. The second was a surprising – and refreshing – new white dial which gave the model a personality of its, own separate from the film.
Price: $420 $357 Case Size: 34mm Thickness: 12.5mm Lug to Lug: 41mm Lug Width: 16mm Crystal: Sapphire Water Resistance: 30m Movement: Seiko NH35A
Here we get into true field watch territory with the General Purpose from Marathon. This 34mm case may seems small, but it’s truly a faithful size in terms field-style models you may have found in the 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. A hallmark of Marathon design (and utility) is the use of tritium tubes for the lume. This watch is a real bridge between vintage and modern.
Price: Case Size: 39.4 mm Thickness: 13.2mm Lug to Lug:48.1 mm Lug Width: 20mm Crystal: Hardlex Water Resistance:100m Movement: 4R36
While Seiko may not necessarily be a dyed-in-the-whool field watch brand, the SRPG27 brings the goods within the context of the modern Seiko 5 collection. It basically utilizes every classic design motif in the range from the 12-hour numerals to the 24-hour inner time indicator to the style of the markings with the added flourish of red in the seconds hand.
Price: $575 Case Size: 41.7mm Thickness: 12.3mm Lug to Lug: 49.5 mm Lug Width: 20mm Crystal: Hardlex Water Resistance:200m Movement: 4R35
Seiko has a host of watches that have entered into tool-watch lore by way of a nickname. From Tuna to Turtle to perhaps the coolest: Samurai. The Seiko Samurai has always been easily identified by its aggressive design mode, with sharp edges that speak to its name. This year however, Seiko pared down that look and re-delivered the Samurai in a more broadly appealing silhouette. We also really love the new red colorway.
Price: $3,400 Case Size: 39mm Thickness: 12.7mm Lug to Lug: 47 mm Lug Width: 20mm Crystal: Sapphire Water Resistance:300m Movement: L888
The Longines Legend Diver is one very few dive watches that get to claim icon status. The brand has done a great job rolling out this model in the 39mm sizing. Where we once were left to choose between classic black and a handsome blue, we now – as of a few months ago – also have a trio of new colors. In all we now have Terracotta red, Anthracite grey, Green, Blue, and Black. The possibilities are endless … if you consider five things to be endless.
Price: $1,590 Case Size: 39mm Thickness: 10.7mm Lug to Lug: 41.5 mm Lug Width: 20mm Crystal: Sapphire Water Resistance:200m Movement: Sellita SW200-1
Doxa just might be on the lowest-key, most recognizable designs in all of watches. That case shape and the beads-of-rice bracelet just speak to a certain ‘70s era of dive and watch enthusiasm. But for so long, many felt the Doxa diving range to be a touch too large. That is until this year when the brand released the Sub200T line, taking the legendary format and bringing it down to size for most, in every iconic colorway – with a new emerald color for good measure.
Price: $695 $556 Case Size: 39mm, Thickness: 13.3mm, Lug to Lug: 45.5mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 100m, Movement: Solar V192
Nicknamed the ‘Seitona’ by some due to its Panda-dial resemblance to a certain iconic chronograph, this solar powered Seiko packs a lot of watch into a versatile case. In addition to the expected chronograph functionality there are some really smart touches here. For example, the chronograph sub-dials actually hide the solar cells. Also, you’ll notice the E and F at the 6 o’clock sub-dial which doubles as a charge indicator letting you know if the 6-month charge is empty or full when the chronograph is not in use. Also of note is the subtly sized matching date window at 4:30 and the high quality bracelet that punches above its weight class.
Price: $2,400 on strap, $2,500 on bracelet, Case Size: 40mm, Thickness: 14.4mm, Lug to Lug: 42.5mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 30m, Movement: Automatic Calibre J880.2
The Junghans Max Bill has been a true mainstay for fans of mid-century and Bauhaus design since 1961. If you’re the kind of person who wants a chronograph that is a little more on the minimalist or dressy side rather than sporty, the Chronoscope is one of the best options out there. The barely-there bezel, clean dial, and era-appropriate pushers come together in unfussy harmony. One of the great dress chronographs out there, the Max Bill Chronoscope comes on either a leather strap or steel bracelet. And we can’t forget the special Bauhaus edition that has red accents on the hour and minutes hand and date window.
Price: $575, Case Size: 41.5mm, Thickness: 13.7mm, Lug to Lug: 51mm, Lug Width: 22mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 300m, Movement: Meca-quartz Calibre Seiko VK64
Chrono-divers at an accessible price point don’t come around very often but Unimatic nailed this one. The Italian brand’s instantly recognizable design language is bolstered by hefty water resistance but without added case girth made possible by the use of a mega-quartz movement. Style and substance co-exist here with the 120-click rotating bezel with lumed pip retaining that smooth finish that is so identifiable with Unimatic.
Price: $1,095, Case Size: 41mm, Thickness: 13.8mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 200m, Movement: Powermatic 80.661
A true GMT with an independently adjustable hour hand and bi-color bezel for just around a thousand bucks? Operating under the Swatch Group umbrella, Certina released one of the great value travel watches earlier this year with the DS Action GMT Powermatic 80. There are three variations available: a green and black bezel with black dial and green GMT hand on bracelet; a red and blue bezel with blue dial and red GMT hand on bracelet; and a very cool retro root beer style with gold PVD accents on a brown leather strap.
Price: $435 $369 for SSK023 and $415 $332 for SSK025, Case Size: 39.4mm, Thickness: 13.6mm, Lug to Lug: 47.9mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Crystal: Hardlex, Water Resistance: 100m, Movement: Automatic 4R34
The Seiko 5 really is one of the great entryways into watch collecting and this pair of Sports Field GMT watches are prime examples. Ideally proportioned for just about any wrist size, this is a tough and highly legible travel watch that exudes value. Seen here in the SSK023 variant done in a stainless steel case with matching bracelet or the SSK025 variant in a black PVD coating on matching calfskin strap, these travel watches have touches like a fixed bezel, exhibition case back, and plenty of lume that make it one of the more versatile travel watches out there.
Price: $895, Case Size: 43mm, Thickness: 12.7mm, Lug to Lug: 49.5mm, Lug Width: 22mm, Crystal: Sapphire, Water Resistance: 30m, Movement: Miyota 9075
The Wilton is a classic GMT that happened to be outfitted with the Miyota 9075, the movement maker’s first true GMT caliber. The gold-plated case and embossed azimuthal projection world map are distinctly dressy which is actually a little refreshing in a world of sportier travel watches. As with the previously mentioned Certina, finding a true GMT at this price point isn’t easy so kudos to Bulova.
